Is learning Pinyin from the scratch efficient?
Do you want to understand how Chinese sounds form?
Or do you want to communicate with Chinese people?
If you really want to understand how we talk and talk in Chinese, please watch this video
WE CHINESE DON’T LEARN PINYIN TO UNDERSTAND OR SPEAK CHINESE
(Intro video)
1. Native Chinese never use Pinyin to learn Chinese speaking
2. We learn Mandarin by hearing from our parents
3. We start to learn Pinyin after we are already fluent in Chinese. We hear and speak Chinese to learn Pinyin, not the other way around
None of us learned Pinyin before we could understand and speak Chinese
Learning Pinyin first makes foreign students to feel very hard to learn Chinese and they find themselves to be stuck in troubles of understanding or making a good pronunciation themselves even after a long period of time
Besides of that, Pinyin is NOT the Chinese language
We acquire a language by comprehensible input
To learn better we need to understand the message of the language, to understand better we need to distinguish the sounds correctly through the message from other people
I will give you an example
我吃饭 (I eat a meal)
Did you understand what I am saying?
If you already understand what I said in Chinese without Pinyin, you learned Chinese very well. The next step is that you imitate what I said if you also want to say ‘I eat’
You have just learned one expression without learning Pinyin
You could look up the pinyin to polish your pronunciation at this moment if you want to
This is way much better of understanding Pinyin
Learning Pinyin with understanding nothing is totally different from the learning it when you already understood the message you’ve got
I repeat this again
Leaning Pinyin by pieces meaninglessly is no use
You could refer Pinyin just when you need to understand the message including how it sounds or how to pronounce it from time to time and this approach helps you a lot the other way around
Do you get my point?
So, in this moment I will just explain some basic principles of Pinyin to right jump on the expressions that you really want to understand and talk to native Chinese speakers
It would take not much longer
Here we go
Now you understood the Chinese tone and have a
gist of Pinyin
The more you learn Chinese while reading,
listening to, speaking, and writing Chinese, the better you could understand
about Pinyin
As I said, don’t push yourself too hard
from the beginning because you will learn Pinyin after all anyway if you keep
learning
This way is more natural and easier like
native Chinese speakers had learned
No matter how long you study Pinyin, you’d
never fully understand it before you understand and speak Chinese in a
meaningful way
This way of learning could be applied to
learn any other language like English as well.
You can absorb and understand any sound
from comprehensible Input in a meaningful way.
Thank you
