Imaginez que vous appreniez l'anglais en lisant un livre d'histoires pour enfant qui contient des images illustrant l'histoire.
Quand vous lisez cette phrase, vous apprenez le sens de la phrase en voyant l'image et en écoutant le son. Quand vous entendez le son en premier, vous vous rappelez presque du son alors vous pouvez l'imiter immédiatement. Mais, après quelques secondes, vous ne pouvez pas vous rappeler comment prononcer chaque mot correctement. Votre mémoire du son s'estompe rapidement et vous confondez l'accent, le rythme et la hauteur. Alors, vous avez besoin de l’écouter encore si vous voulez le prononcer correctement. 
Ce problème se produit souvent si la langue que vous apprenez est une langue tonale comme le chinois, le vietnamien et le thaïlandais. Par exemple le mot “glisser” est traduit 倒 [shuāidǎo] en chinois. Quand vous entendez le son en premier, vous êtes capable d’imiter pratiquement le son. Mais après juste 10 secondes, les chances pour que vous puissiez le prononcer correctement est faible.Vous confondez la prononciation de “shuai”  avec [shuāi], [shuái] [shuǎi],  [shuài] ou encore avec [dǎo]. Mais vous pouvez encore vous souvenir de l’image, ou de la signification bien plus longtemps que le son. Vous pouvez aussi vous rappeler des symboles phonétiques [shuaidao] même si vous avez oublié l’intonation. Je vous recommande vivement de vous tester sur ce point.
 Alors pourquoi n’est-on pas capable de nous rappeler autant du son que du visuel ou du sens des mots ?
